Quick answer: Dental implant treatment usually follows these steps: consultation and imaging, any preparation such as extractions or grafting, implant placement, several months of healing while bone bonds to the implant, then the final crown, bridge or denture. Timelines vary, and your dentist will give you a personal plan.

- Consultation and exam. Health history, exam, and imaging. Your dentist discusses options, risks, timeline, and fees.
- Preparation, if needed. Extraction of a failing tooth, gum treatment, or bone grafting.
- Implant placement. The implant is placed in the jawbone, usually under local anesthesia; sedation may be offered.
- Healing (osseointegration). Bone grows around the implant. This can take several months; a temporary tooth may be worn. In some cases teeth can be placed the same day.
- Abutment and final restoration. The crown, bridge, or denture is made and attached.
- Maintenance. Daily cleaning and regular checkups help long-term success.
Every case differs; your dentist will give you a timeline specific to you.
